Musical Excellence

Music is truly at the heart of Stafford Grammar School. Our students have the opportunity to explore their creativity and develop their musical talents.

Our music department is renowned across Staffordshire and has travelled across the UK and into Europe on tour. Our choirs, instrumental groups, orchestra, concert band and big band perform both within and outside school to a wide variety of audiences. We perform around 40 concerts each year, including our fantastic large-scale Christmas and Easter concerts.

If you are a keen musician, then Stafford Grammar School is the place to be.

We want our pupils to be actively involved and make life-long friendships through their participation in music. Seeing new Year 7 pupils performing alongside Sixth Form musicians is a real delight.

As well as the elite performers, Music at Stafford Grammar School really is for everyone. We host regular concerts, involving beginners to Grade 8 standard musicians, to build their confidence and allow them to perform for a smaller, supportive audience. Our development groups (Little Big Band and Wind Band, for example) are specifically for musicians just beginning their musical journey with us.

Our Musicians beyond Stafford Grammar

We are delighted that many pupils at Stafford Grammar School represent us in national ensembles such as:

– The National Youth Choir of Great Britain

– The National Concert Band of Great Britain

– The National Youth Orchestra

– The National Youth Jazz Orchestra

– The National Youth Music Theatre

A number of prestigious youth orchestras, such as CBSO Youth Orchestra

We regularly have pupils studying at conservatoire junior departments at the weekend, including the Royal College of Music, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music.

Whilst Music is for everyone and we take great pride in seeing significant numbers of pupils participate, Music at SGS does prepare pupils for further education and a career in the industry.  Recently, pupils have gone on to study Music at the Royal Northern College of Music, Trinity College, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the University of Cambridge, and we celebrate those who have established themselves with contracts in leading ensembles.  Dylan, a former leader of our orchestra, is currently a member of the 1st Violin section of Manchester’s Halle Orchestra and Hannah, a former leading lady at Stafford Grammar is currently starring in London’s West End playing principal roles in shows such as Wicked!, Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton.
