Sporting Excellence

Our mission is to offer a broad and inspiring programme of sport, so that all pupils at Stafford Grammar School have the opportunity to develop their skills, teamwork, leadership and healthy lifestyles.

We believe that sport is for everyone, regardless of ability and our goal here at Stafford
Grammar School is for pupils to adopt a life-long love of physical activity.

Our pupil-centred approach was a defining factor in the school
receiving the ISA National Award for Outstanding Sport, which highlighted pupil voice as a
key strength in shaping a curriculum that resonates with the diverse interests of our
community.”
(S.Gunnell – Director of Sport)

Through inspiring teaching and high-level coaching, we ensure all students reach their sporting potential. Our
curriculum is designed to be inclusive and varied; in timetabled lessons, pupils enjoy traditional team sports like rugby and hockey alongside activities such as dance, gymnastics, dodgeball and orienteering. This variety, supported by pupil feedback, allows students to
explor  different disciplines while being pushed out of their comfort zone in an environment that builds resilience, courage and creativity, which are core values here at school.

In timetabled lessons, our pupils will enjoy:

Athletics

Cricket

Dance/Gymnastics

Football

Rugby

Hockey

Netball

Badminton

Basketball

Rounders

Tennis

Dodgeball

Outdoor Education

Orienteering

Sixth Form Sports

The influence of pupil voice is especially prominent in the Sixth Form, where students have the autonomy to choose options like Yoga and Table Tennis during their games lessons or utilise the modern on-site Fitness Suite. These students also act as leaders and role models, developing their coaching skills by assisting at junior clubs. This culture of leadership ensures that the sporting programme remains relevant and engaging for younger years
while fulfilling the mission to develop leadership qualities.

Facilities on-site include:

6- a-side
astroturf pitch

Extensive grounds

Sports fields

Floodlit tennis

Netball courts

A large sports hall

House Sports

In addition to our external achievements and international tours, the House Sport system plays a vital role in nurturing community spirit and healthy competitiveness among our
pupils. These events provide a dedicated platform for pupils to demonstrate the teamwork and leadership skills they have developed throughout our broad sporting programme. Whether competing on our floodlit courts or in the large sports hall, the
atmosphere is one of intense House pride balanced with the resilience and confidence we aim to instil in every pupil. This tradition ensures that the drive for excellence is shared
across the entire school community, further strengthening the bonds between pupils of all year groups.

Additional Opportunities

Alongside an absolutely packed programme of unchtime and after- school clubs, to further inspire our pupils, we offer popular international opportunities like our biennial ski trip. Building on this success and responding to student enthusiasm, we launched both Junior and Senior Sports Tours. By alternating these tours annually, we ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to
experience the unique teamwork and cultural growth that international sports travel offers.

We are also proud to have had pupils representing Great Britain in rounders, football, ice hockey, shooting, skiing alongside myriad others. Many pupils are also involved in county, regional and sporting academies across our major team and club sports.

While we celebrate students who represent our country, region, and county, the core of our programme remains focused on the enjoyment and growth of every individual.
