Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize

The last term, once again the Science department were invited to help judge the prestigious ‘Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize’, awarded to the writer of the year’s best science book for children under the age of 14. Five pupils from Years 7 and 8 volunteered to read and review the shortlisted books in six weeks, scoring each one out of 20 in a range of categories.

The Royal society combined our scores with those of the other review teams around the country, and just before Christmas announced that this year’s winners of the £10,000 prize are Gianni Sarcone and Marie-Jo Waeber for their book Optical Illusions.

The review team were:

Zoe Catton, Ellen Farmer, Joe Fields, Ella Firth, Amelie Medford.

Joe Fields managed to review five out of six books and is awarded a copy of the winning book in recognition of this feat.

All the shortlisted books are available to borrow from the Science department.

The Royal Society and Mr Beauchamp would like to thank the whole team for their hard work and enthusiasm.

Procedure in case of snow

If there is heavy snow the school will make every effort to remain open. In the very unlikely event of closure, a message will be posted on Twitter and the website to that effect.  If minibuses are unable to access particular routes then those families will be contacted directly by the driver.  Parents should use their own discretion as to whether it is safe to travel. Likewise, children at school can be collected at any point during the school day if conditions deteriorate.

This year we shall once again be supporting House of Bread which is a local charity based in Stafford. House of Bread is an organisation that offers home-cooked meals for vulnerable and homeless people in the Stafford area.

As with last year, House of Bread are running a project called “Quid on a lid” which will enable them to not only add much-needed tins to their food bank but also to help support the increasing range of services that they provide, so if we can go one step further and tape a pound coin to the top of one tin it will assist House of Bread in meeting their goals. (N.B. if you donate more than one tin, a pound coin taped to just one tin is all that we request).

All donations need to be handed in to Mrs Hague-Jones by Thursday 27th September.

100% pass rate, again, 73% A*-B grades

An extremely impressive 73% (69% last year) of all results were at A*-B grades which are vital for entry to many universities. The overall A-level A-E pass te was 100%.

No less than 13 of the 52 candidates achieved all A* and A grades.

Claudia Ballinger and Meera Mahesh achieved A*A*A*, Max Darlington and Tom Horstink achieved A*A* A.

These results will enable the vast majority of our students to move on to their first choice university.

Everybody associated with Stafford Grammar School is proud of the achievements of all of our students. In many cases the real success stories are where potential D and E grades are turned into B grades through sustained hard work and excellent teaching.  We would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in enabling our students to achieve their potential.
