Bonfire Night Celebration

The bonfire will be lit tonight at 6.30 pm with the firework display following at 6.45 pm. Food will be available to purchase from 6 pm. Tickets will be available to buy this evening priced at £5 per adult and £2 per child. Please bring your family and friends.

Congratulations to Callum Thompson who was placed 7th at the William Brookes Biathlon 2019. Callum gained a new personal best in the swimming!

Well done to Harriet Smith who won a bronze medal in the U15 800m freestyle at the midlands short course competition. Harriet knocked a massive 11.8 seconds off her personal best.

Hobbies Exhibition 2019 – Results

A number of exhibitions stalls: 106 and there were 130 participants. There was a diverse range of hobbies, some new interests being showcased and the quality of the exhibitions was really impressive.  As usual, it was a very difficult job for the judges to reach their decision

Following on from the success of last year’s event, we are holding a bonfire night and firework spectacular on Friday 8th November. Hopefully, the weather will be kind this year. The fire will be lit at 6.15 pm and the fireworks will start at 6.45 pm. Food and drink will be available. Further details about tickets will be on next week’s newsletter.

New Parents Meet the Staff – Thu 26th September

We would like to invite you to attend a meeting for all new parents of the school on Thursday 26th September in the Sixth Form Centre at 7:00 pm.

Harvest Festival – Friday 27th September.

This year we will be supporting the House of Bread which is a local charity based in Stafford. House of Bread is an organisation that offers home-cooked meals for vulnerable and homeless people in the Stafford area. This year House of Bread is running their project called “Quid on a lid” which will enable them to not only add much-needed tins to their food bank but also to help support the increasing range of services that they provide, so if we can go one step further and tape a pound coin to the top of one tin it will assist House of Bread in meeting their goals.

Donations could include:

Toiletries (e.g. shampoo, conditioner, shower gel)

However, the House of Bread will welcome all donations

10/10 For Matthew Murray! Huge congratulations to Matthew who, after a remark in his Drama GCSE (taking it from a 7 to a 9!) has a full set of 10 Grade 9s in his GCSE examinations to go with an A in his Further Maths. Matthew is the first person at SGS to achieve this. Fantastic!

Well done to Callum Thompson, after dedicated training, Callum came 2nd overall in the West Midlands Aquathlon series and has now been invited to regional development days.

Midlands ISA Swimming Gala – Thursday 3rd October

The school has entered the Midlands ISA Swimming Gala on Thursday 3rd October. This does clash with Prize Giving, however, the bus should arrive back at school for approximately 5 pm. Will swimmers please see Mr Harwood if you wish to be considered for selection.

Excellent GCSE Results at Stafford Grammar School

97% 9 – 4 grades (including English and Mathematics)

51% of all grades achieved were grades 9 – 7.
7 out of the 42 students achieved all 9 – 7 grades.

Nayantika Chaudary and Darcie Morris both achieved 9 grade 9s and 1
grade 8.  Matthew Murray achieved 9 grade 9s and 1 grade 7.  Olivia Stocking achieved 8 grade 9s and 2 grade 8s.  Olivia Howdle achieved 7 grade 9s, 2 grade 8s and 1 grade 7. Amy McGeown achieved 6 grade 9s and 4 grade 8s. Shreiya Singh achieved 4 grade 9s, 3 grade 8s and 3 grade 7s.

Headmaster, Lee Thomas said:

that our focus on enabling the best in every pupil, and the consistent

Excellent A-level Results at Stafford Grammar School
100% A-level pass rate, again
65% A*- B grades

Stafford Grammar School students achieved an impressive 65% of all results at A*- B grades, which are vital for entry to many universities. The overall A-level A*- E pass rate was 100%, with almost 90% of students achieving all A*- C grades at A-level.

Amongst the highest achievers were Ella Lewis who achieved A* A* A and Ellenor Marshall and Jenny Kendall who achieved A A A.
These results will enable the vast majority of our students to move on to their first-choice university.

There were also some excellent results at AS level, with Chloe Patrick achieving 5 A grades, Matthew Garnett and Peter Owen achieving 4 A grades and Annabel Piper achieving 3 A grades. These excellent results certainly bode well for next year!

School Sports Day – Friday 21st June 2019

The annual school sports day will be held at Rowley Park Stadium on Friday 21st June 2019. Pupils need to be at the stadium by 12:45 pm ready for it to start at 1 pm, it will be finished by 3:50 pm.

Periods 1 and half of period 2 will run as normal. Lunch will be from 11:30 – 12:15 pm.

Buses will collect pupils from outside the Sports Hall starting at 1200hrs and shuttle back and forward to Rowley Park until there is no one left to take.

Pupils will be available for pick up from Rowley park after the presentation has finished this will be approximately 3:50 pm. Pupils who catch the school bus home will be picked up at Rowley Park.

All parents are welcome to spectate. In the event of bad weather, parents should contact the school by 12 noon in case of cancellation.

Please note pupils should be picked up from Rowley Park NOT school.

SPS children, who go home by bus will depart SPS slightly earlier than normal. They will go via Rowley Park to collect SGS children from there. The drop off timings will remain the same.

The U15 netball team went to Stafford Manor High School to play in the 15/16 District Tournament. There were nine teams in total that were split into two groups. Games were quick lasting only 7 minutes.

SGS came second in their group and finished 5th overall.

Girls Football

Thursday 4th April 

The girls’ football team played at Stafford Town FC in awful conditions. However, this did not dampen their spirits.

OSSMA draw 0-0

2nd game lost 1-0

Nether Stowe School won 2-0 with Milly Green making history with scoring the first goal followed by Olivia Cummings scoring the second.

The 2nd game against Nether Stowe lost 2-1 however Sasha Donoghue set up Grace Whittall with a fabulous goal. Well done!

Chase Terrace lost 1-0

2nd game lost 2-0.

Even though the girls were cold and a little wet they played really well considering that this was their first experience playing a 7-a-side game.

Young Enterprise

On Wednesday evening our two lower sixth Young Enterprise teams attended this year’s presentation and awards ceremony at World of Wedgwood.

This was the final stage of the competition with the teams having already participated in a trade fair, interview and submission of a detailed company report.

Both teams gave excellent presentations and were a credit to Stafford Grammar School. They behaved in an exemplary manner and were by far the best turns out teams. Mrs Hague-Jones attended the awards ceremony and was extremely proud of both teams and despite neither team winning the overall prize of reaching the West Midlands final she said that “they were all winners on the night”.

However, there was good news with the Classy Glass Company won the award for “Best Interview 2019”.

ECO-Group

Miss Lloyd is staring an eco-group. This will consist of an eco-committee who will generate ideas for improving the school environment and will work towards gaining the green flag award. The other group will do practical things like growing plants and building bee boxes.

If you are interested in either, please let Miss Lloyd know either by email or in person before the end of the term. Ideally, she needs a representative from each year group on the eco committee.

Thursday 28th March 

Two teams were entered in the U13 district tournament at Penkridge Middle School.

Team 1 progressed to the semi-finals and played against Christ Church. It was a well-matched game with full time ending with a draw 2-2.

The game went to extra time with the first team to score, winning the match. Unfortunately, the girls lost however, it was a delightful game to watch.

There are still two more games to play on Saturday against Nottingham High School.

Maths Challenge

The annual Year 9 and 10 individual Maths Challenge was done just before half term.

Over a quarter of a million students took part and we are very pleased that the following students achieved certificates in recognition of their high scores.

In the top 7% in the country and awarded both gold certificate and best in Year 9 is Mo Baker whilst Cameron Strang is awarded 3 certificates for gold, best in Year 10 and best in school.

Stafford Grammar & Prep School Open Week: Wednesday 20th – Friday 22nd March

Stafford Prep Discovery Days: Tuesday 2nd & Wednesday 3rd April 19

 SGS/SPS Open Days 

Following on from previous years, we are holding Open Days from Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd March 2019. The open days give an opportunity for parents to see Stafford Grammar School and Stafford Preparatory School in action on a real working day. There is no need to make an appointment; we look forward to welcoming visitors any time between 9 am and 11 am or 1 pm and 3 pm. All visitors should arrive at the main SGS school reception. There will be allocated parking on the main school car park and refreshments will be available. Visitors will be able to talk to staff, pupils, Mr Darley and myself, before being given guided group tours of the Grammar School, Sixth Form and the Preparatory School while normal lessons are taking place. We are very proud of what goes on in our school every day and we want to give visitors the opportunity to see us in action!

Please feel free to accompany friends or relatives who are considering schools for their children’s future, and encourage them to visit during the open days to discover what is on offer from Reception through to Sixth Form. Barn Bank Lane Please could we ask any parents who use Barn Bank Lane (opposite the school entrance) to drive carefully and be aware of other road users.  This lane is very narrow in places and there have been several accidents in the past. There have been a couple of complaints from local residents; they have been advised to take down number plates and report to the police. Netball U16 played against Tettenhall and lost 27-24 it was an extremely close game and quite competitive with one player from SGS fracturing a finger (Amy McGeown). Lydia Lewis was player of the match. U13 Team travelled down to Malvern St James for the ISA tournament. The team only just missed out onto progressing into the semi-finals by finishing 3rd in their group. The biggest win 12-2 against Birchfield School. Football Tuesday 12th February The U14 football team lost to Walton 3-4   Wednesday 13th February Well done to the 1st XI football team who beat Denstone 3-1and to the U15’s who drew 2-2. Nick Messer scored both goals. Well done!

Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize The last term, once again the Science department were invited to help judge the prestigious ‘Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize’, awarded to the writer of the year’s best science book for children under the age of 14. Five pupils from Years 7 and 8 volunteered to read and review the shortlisted books in six weeks, scoring each one out of 20 in a range of categories. The Royal society combined our scores with those of the other review teams around the country, and just before Christmas announced that this year’s winners of the £10,000 prize are Gianni Sarcone and Marie-Jo Waeber for their book Optical Illusions. The review team were: Zoe Catton, Ellen Farmer, Joe Fields, Ella Firth, Amelie Medford. Joe Fields managed to review five out of six books and is awarded a copy of the winning book in recognition of this feat. All the shortlisted books are available to borrow from the Science department. The Royal Society and Mr Beauchamp would like to thank the whole team for their hard work and enthusiasm. Procedure in case of snow If there is heavy snow the school will make every effort to remain open. In the very unlikely event of closure, a message will be posted on Twitter and the website to that effect.  If minibuses are unable to access particular routes then those families will be contacted directly by the driver.  Parents should use their own discretion as to whether it is safe to travel. Likewise, children at school can be collected at any point during the school day if conditions deteriorate.

Adults entering school buildings without making an appointment and signing in at Reception

For safeguarding and security reasons it is very important that parents and other adults do not enter school buildings without having first signed in at the school reception or the school office. Should parents need to enter the buildings, it will be for an arranged meeting with a member of staff and that member of staff will meet and accompany the parents. If parents wish to speak with teachers, prior appointments must be made. Parents can email or telephone school or visit the school reception or the school office to request appointments with teaching staff. It is not appropriate for parents to enter school buildings with the intention of speaking to teachers without a prior appointment when dropping off or collecting their children. At special events such as concerts and parents evenings, etc., visiting adults will not be required to sign in.

Signing up for Hockey

Don’t forget to sign up for Hockey Monday 10th and Monday 17th December. On Monday 17th December wear a Christmas jumper and a Santa’s hat for the last hockey training session of the year.

SGS Carol Service – Friday 21st December

The school term finishes at the end of the SGS Carol Service at St Mary’s in Stafford on Friday 21st December at 12 noon. Children should be collected by parents outside the church unless they are going home on school buses which will depart from St Mary’s immediately after the service.

In November all the following students studying AS or A level Maths took part in the senior Math Challenge. 1st Team Hockey

James Bradburn and Nick Messer played their first Hockey Fixture this year. in our first Mixed game. The 1st team won 5-1 again Dixie Grammar. Rugby Fixtures

Monday 3rd December Congratulations to the U13 Rugby team who drew against Lichfield, 7 tries each. The boys put in a spirited second half performance after being 5-2 down at half time. Both teams played extremely well. Wednesday 5th December The 1st XV Rugby team lost to Queen Mary’s Grammar 7-5 in the cup quarter final.

Monday 19th November The 1st Hockey team played in the Midlands Cup, at Rugby Sports Centre. The team progressed through to the semi-finals and lost on penalties 4-1. Saturday 24 th November Fixtures played against Nottingham High School, U12 won 2-0 (Laura Fenton scored her first goal for the team and Zoe Catton scored). U13 lost 7-1 (Constance Whorton scored). U15 won 2-0 (Manako Sakai scored both goals). A special mention to Annapurna Rai and Harriet Clarke who played really well in defence. Congratulations go to Emma Benson, Becky Lawrence & Chloe Patrick for taking part in the Math Olympiad. Emma & Becky both did well and are awarded certificates, whilst Chloe managed to achieve a mark in the top 300 girls nationally & is awarded a certificate if distinction. Well Done!

Christmas Bonfire & Fireworks Evening – Friday 14th December

We are holding this event after the Prep Christmas Fair on Friday 14th December. The bonfire will be lit at 5pm and fireworks will commence at 5.15pm. We have received more worrying information this week about the game Fortnite. Between September and October of this year there were over 53,000 reported scams mostly preying on the vulnerability of children when they are searching for V-Bucks. Hockey

Monday 5th November Stafford Grammar School U14 had their first game and won 13-0 against Abotts Bromley. The U13 also won 9-0 against Abotts Bromley. International Space Challenge

The Language Department are pleased to announce the GCSE French and German teams won first and second prize in the International space challenge at Cosford. The teams had to design a specification for a space hotel and give a marketing presentation in the target language in front of RAF linguists & space engineers. The German team were the overall winners and achieved 10/10 for engineering and the French team came a close second managing to speak for the longest for their French presentation. Boys Football WC 8th October Tuesday – The U14 Football team lost in the county cup against Paulet 4-1. Wednesday – The U15 Rugby team beat Tettenhall College 47-14. Girls Hockey WC 1st October The U12 hockey team won 6-0, well done to Amber Smitt who scored 5 and Lizzie Hammond who scored 1. The U13 lost 5-1 against Terra Nova. The first team played against King Edwards Lichfield (A) the match ended 2-2 with 10 players. Girls Hockey WC 8th October The U15 hockey team v Denstone were down 6-0 by halftime. Then in the second half they played their B team and scored 1. Final score 6-1. All the girls played extremely well considering how hot it was and limited subs. Fixtures Well done to the Hockey first team who beat Shrewsbury School second team 8-0 last week and Abbotsholme 5-1 on Wednesday. The 1st XV rugby team lost in a friendly 14-5 against Tettenhall in a very physical game on Wednesday. The U14 ISA football has been postponed until the 27th of September due to the weather. Geography Film Club If any pupils from year 7,8 & 9 are interested in watching a Geography movie over the lunchtime period then come along. It will be held on Mondays in L6 at 12:15pm– 12:55 pm, bring your lunch along. Harvest Festival –Friday, September 28th This year we shall once again be supporting House of Bread which is a local charity based in Stafford. House of Bread is an organisation that offers home-cooked meals for vulnerable and homeless people in the Stafford area. As with last year, House of Bread are running a project called “Quid on a lid” which will enable them to not only add much-needed tins to their food bank but also to help support the increasing range of services that they provide, so if we can go one step further and tape a pound coin to the top of one tin it will assist House of Bread in meeting their goals. (N.B. if you donate more than one tin, a pound coin taped to just one tin is all that we request). All donations need to be handed in to Mrs Hague-Jones by Thursday 27th September.

Maths Challenge Just before the summer break, 3 pupils were invited to take part in a follow-on round called the “Junior Kangaroo” after they did exceptionally well in the Junior Maths Challenge. The Certificate and “Prizes” came through during the holidays. Mohamed Baker excelled again and was in the top 25% to achieve a Certificate of Merit. Louis Glover and Joe McCandless also took part and received a Certificate for being one of just 7,400 pupils nationally to take part. Well Done! County Tie Congratulations to Poppy Dixon who has been selected for the U12 equestrian squad! She is also playing County Netball and has trials for this season in a few weeks. Good luck, Poppy! Presentation of Certificates in Assembly Friday 7th September Towards the end of the last term, a plant sale was held in aid of the West Midlands Air Ambulance charity. Four members of Year 7 (now Year 8) worked tirelessly over many weeks, growing and tending cutting and plants, then helping to publicise, organise and run the sale itself. The sale was a huge success and a total of £274.45 was raised. Many thanks to everyone who donated or bought a plant. Particular thanks and congratulations to: Laura Adams, Joe Fields, Ruby Goode, Charlotte Temperton.

STAFFORD GRAMMAR SCHOOL A-LEVEL PRESS RELEASE

100% pass rate, again, 73% A*-B grades An extremely impressive 73% (69% last year) of all results were at A*-B grades which are vital for entry to many universities. The overall A-level A-E pass te was 100%.  No less than 13 of the 52 candidates achieved all A* and A grades.  Claudia Ballinger and Meera Mahesh achieved A*A*A*, Max Darlington and Tom Horstink achieved A*A* A.  These results will enable the vast majority of our students to move on to their first choice university.  Everybody associated with Stafford Grammar School is proud of the achievements of all of our students. In many cases the real success stories are where potential D and E grades are turned into B grades through sustained hard work and excellent teaching.  We would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in enabling our students to achieve their potential.

The annual school sports day will be held at Rowley Park Stadium Friday 22nd June 2018.

Buses will collect pupils from outside the sports hall starting at 12 p.m. The Sports day will commence at 1 p.m. and finish at 3.50 p.m. Lunch will be 11.30 – 12.15 p.m.

Pick up is from Rowley Park, buses will leave at 4 p.m. Prep School children will be picked up from school as normal.

Maths Challenge During February half term, all students were asked to take part in the Maths on Merseyside Maths Challenge – which is run by the University of Liverpool. The best of the entries were sent away to be marked by lecturers at the University and we are very pleased to have received commendations for the following 5 students. Bethany Barrett and Dylan Edge entered the Open Challenge – which is for anyone under 18 – and they have been invited to take part in a Maths Evening at Liverpool University. Olivia Howdle achieved a certificate for best in school for the Senior Challenge (Years 9&10) Mohamed Baker achieved a certificate for best in school for the Junior Challenge (Years 7&8) and has also been awarded a prize which he is invited to collect at a Presentation Evening at Liverpool University. Maaz Malek achieved Certificate of Merit for the Junior Challenge (Years 7&8) and has similarly been awarded a prize to collect at Liverpool University. Senior Maths Challenge Some weeks ago the A-level Mathematicians all took part in the Senior Maths Challenge. They have achieved some excellent results from over 82,000 pupils from across the UK. In the top 30% achieving Bronze certificates were: Arun Pawar, Freddie Joustra, (who was also the best achieving student in the Lower Sixth) Amina Dalton, Ellie Cooke, Dylan Edge, Mujtaba Hussain, Dom Sterland, Bethany Barrett and Finley Morris. In the top 20%, achieving silver certificates were: Winifred Lee, Max Darlington, Tom Horstink, Meera Mahesh and Jeet Sicar. In the top 10% nationally and selected to go on to the next round and take part in the senior Kangaroo were Martin Bowers and Claudia Ballinger. Martin and Claudia both achieved a Gold certificate for the Maths Challenge and then went on to achieve certificates of Merit for the Senior Kangaroo – placing them amongst the best of the best nationally in mathematical problem-solving skills. Many congratulations to them both. Maths Badges Presented to the following students for continued help and support given to other students and to the Maths teachers during maths clinic. Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize Last term, once again the Science Department were invited to help judge the prestigious “Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize”, award to the writer of the year’s best science book for children under the age of 14. Seven pupils from year 6 and 7 volunteered to read and review the shortlisted books in six weeks. The Royal Society combined our scores with those of the other review teams around the country. Just before Christmas, it was announced that this year’s winner of the £10.000 prize is Professor Robert Winston for his book “Home Lab-exciting experiments for budding scientists”. The Year 7 Team were: Alice Bradburn, Alex Degg Sasha Donoghue, Joe Fields, George Shaw. Sasha Donoghue managed to review all six books and is awarded a book in recognition of this feat. All the shortlisted books are available to borrow from the Science Department. The Royal Society and Mrs Beauchamp would like to thank the whole team for their hard work and enthusiasm.
