Entrance Assessments and Requirements

We welcome pupils to join Stafford Grammar School throughout the year. The majority of pupils join us at key entry points, such as for the start of Year 7, but each year we regularly welcome many new pupils during term-time.

All pupils wishing to join Stafford Grammar School take our entrance assessments in English and Mathematics.

Parents are invited to make an appointment to visit Stafford Prep. School, to view the school, see the children at work and meet the Head and staff.

Prospective pupils are then invited to attend on a school day. During the course of the morning the children (Years 3-6) will undertake an entrance assessment in both English and Mathematics. These are designed to assess each child’s potential and will be taken in a relaxed atmosphere with a teacher/TA on hand to explain any instructions the children do not understand. Our aim is to find out what each child can do, rather than what they cannot and also to get an idea of hobbies and interests. They will also be able to join current Prep. School children for breaks, lunch and the day’s activities.

For Reception, Year 1 and 2 children will spend the morning/day in the relevant class.  There are no formal entry requirements. The Head of the Prep. School will write/speak to parents on the day following the visit with the result of the assessment.

Children can join the Prep. School at any point during the academic year if there are places available.
Offers of entry from the Prep. School into the Senior School are made by the Headmaster to Year 6 pupils on the basis of entrance assessments, teachers' recommendations and internal continuous assessment of ability in the Prep. School. Children that achieve the highest scores are invited to a scholarship day which involves further written assessments and practical challenges.

In October, we hold an entrance assessment day for Year 6 pupils wishing to join Year 7 the following September.

Year 6 pupils who pass the entrance assessment are invited to an interview with the Headmaster (accompanied by their parents), which is a friendly chat to find out more about our prospective pupils, their hobbies and interests.

Entrance assessments are available for entry into Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 throughout the year and we are very happy to arrange these on an individual basis.

Sixth Form lessons at Stafford Grammar

Each year, we are delighted to welcome new students into our Sixth Form.

All prospective Sixth Form students from other schools can enjoy a taster day at Stafford Grammar School and have an interview with the Head of Sixth Form.

Offers of entry into the Sixth Form are then conditional upon GCSE results.

A place in the Sixth Form is conditional upon students gaining at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or equivalent, including at least a grade 4 in Mathematics and English Language. Often there will be a requirement of the minimum of a grade 6 or equivalent for those subjects that the student wishes to study at AS level.
For AS Mathematics, students must have followed the Higher Tier course and gained at least a grade 7 or equivalent.
Any offer is also conditional upon a successful application including an interview and a satisfactory reference from the student’s current school.

Almost everyone in the Lower Sixth Form studies four AS levels and the majority go on to study three A-level courses. Some students do continue with four A-levels, but this is dependent on academic and career aims.
