Academic excellence has never been the sole objective in forward looking schools.  We are also concerned with the development of a healthy body and a sound character, the fostering of spiritual awareness and sensitivity and the promotion of creative talents.

The School has impressive facilities to enable an all-round education including sport, music, ICT and design technology.

Rugby, hockey, football, netball, cricket, rounders, tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, athletics, gymnastics and health-related fitness are all taught within P.E. and are available as extra-curricular activities involving clubs and competitive fixtures. Pupils also swim at Stafford Leisure Centre in our annual gala. A School Sports Hall opened in 1999 which has since been extended with additional changing rooms and a new fitness suite opened in the summer of 2008.  The most recent development is an extensive sports field expansion on newly purchased land to enable block fixtures and greater flexibility in pitch use.

We are proud of our tradition of involving large numbers of pupils in teams and of building a healthy team spirit. This has helped to produce an enviable record of competitive success, our teams often winning local, county, regional and national competitions and individuals regularly securing places in county teams. Sporting excellence at Stafford Grammar School is demonstrated by individuals achieving success in several sports at national level such as in swimming, athletics and football.

Music plays an important part in the life of the School.  The Music Centre was extended in 2004.  There are choirs, instrumental groups, an orchestra, a concert band and "big band"  who perform within and outside school to a variety of audiences.  Pupils have the opportunity to learn to play a wide range of musical instruments with tuition provided by peripatetic teachers in specialist teaching rooms with many pupils of all ages progressing from beginner to Grade 8.

Drama enables pupils to gain confidence and self-understanding.  The School plays are major productions in the newly refurbished Library Theatre and many pupils are involved.  There are extra-curricular drama and stage management clubs.  LAMDA tuition is also available on a peripatetic basis.  There is a flourishing dance club.

The School has an extensive Art and Design Technology department.  Pupils’ powers of observation and imagination are developed through practical skills and theoretical studies involving areas as varied as drawing, painting, printmaking, digital photography and textiles.  There are frequent competitions and exhibitions of work as well as projects linked with other departments.  In Design Technology pupils experience activities ranging from traditional woodwork and metalwork to graphics, electronics and Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM).

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is encouraged as an activity which breeds self-confidence and develops initiative and responsibility.  Virtually all Year 9 pupils start the Bronze award with most continuing through to Silver and Gold. Stafford Grammar School achieves more Duke of Edinburgh awards each year than any other school in Staffordshire.

The Young Enterprise Scheme operates very successfully in the Sixth Form and Stafford Grammar School companies make and market a product and compete in local competitions.
